Local Author Wins National Recognition
First-Of-Its-Kind Book Honored
SAN DIEGO, California - December 2, 2004.
Radcliffe Publishing is pleased to announce a national
honor for first-time author Sheila Wolf. Her book, Pregnancy
and Oral Health: The critical connection between your
mouth and your baby, has been named an Award Finalist
in the health category of the USA Book News "Best
Books 2004" competition. Competition information
and the complete list of finalists and winners are available
at www.usabooknews.com.
Sheila Wolf's specialty is the non-surgical
treatment of gum disease, an infection that in recent
years has been linked to increased risk of serious illnesses,
including heart attack, stroke, and diabetic complications.
Gum infections afflict almost four out of five Americans,
and are a special concern for pregnant women.
"With all the excess hormones floating
around in the body in preparation for childbirth, half
to three-quarters of mothers-to-be develop pregnancy
gingivitis, and bleeding, tender gums," Wolf states.
"Those who have a more serious infection, periodontitis,
are nearly eight times more likely to have a premature
baby - born too early and too small." With women
waiting longer to start families the prevalence of serious
gum infections has increased over the years.
A registered dental hygienist for more
than thirty years, Wolf has had remarkable success treating
patients with non-invasive techniques, supported by
a simple but effective home-care regimen. In response
to the Call to Action in the 2000 Surgeon General's
report on oral health in America, she decided two years
ago to take a dramatic step to take her message to people
she could never hope to reach in her dental chair. She
committed her time and resources to creating a book
for mothers-to-be, to teach them how to take control
of their own oral health. Pregnancy and Oral Health
is the result.
Midwest Book Review gave the book a five-star
rating, calling it "A superbly presented and welcome
supplement to pregnancy shelves, and especially recommended
reading for expectant mothers everywhere." Ann
Louise Gittleman, New York Times bestselling author
of The Fat Flush Plan, describes it as "A fascinating
book that every pregnant woman MUST read to ensure her
own health and that of her unborn child."
Pregnancy and Oral Health is an easy-to-read,
entertaining manual that presents a simple, anti-bacterial
self-care program to safeguard mother and baby against
the dangers of oral infections. Warm and friendly in
style, with informative illustrations throughout, it
teaches, empowers, and makes you laugh. The tasteful
and artistic maternity photographs are breathtaking,
making this not only a wonderful gift of health, but
also a gift of beauty.
Pregnancy and Oral Health (ISBN: 0974052809;
price $15.95) is available at bookstores nationwide,
at Amazon.com, and through Sheila's website, www.MamaGums.com,
where she is happy to answer oral health questions.
